The Three Degrees formed in 1963. The line up of Helen Scott, Fayette Pinkney, and Janet Harmon recorded songs on Swan Records and were produced by Richard Barrett and Leon Huff.

In 1966 Sheila Ferguson replaced Helen Scott and Valerie Holiday replaced Janet Harmon. Fayette along with Sheila and Valerie would go on to record for Warner Brothers, Metromedia, Neptune, Roulette, Philadelphia International and CBS Records between 1967-1976

In 1976, Helen Scott returned to replace Fayette Pinkney. Sheila, Valerie, and Helen would go on to record for CBS, Ariola, 3D Records and Supreme Records between 1976 and 1986.

Sheila Ferguson left the group in 1986. After a few people Helen and Valerie met Cynthia Garrsion who remained in the group for 21 years from December of 1989 to December of 2010.
